ABOUT

ASPREE framework initiative

The ASPirin in Reducing Events in the Elderly (ASPREE) trial is a major study of healthy ageing involving 16,703 Australians over 70 and 2,411 Americans over 65. Funded with over $60M from the NIH since 2012, ASPREE tracks participants’ health through extensive phenotyping and clinical data collection. Its biobank includes blood, saliva, and urine samples from over 15,000 participants, with matched follow-up samples from 10,000.

The study has completed whole genome sequencing on 2,000 older, cancer-free Australians in partnership with the Kinghorn Centre/Garvan Institute as part of the Medical Genome Reference Bank (MGRB) project. Targeted DNA sequencing is also underway on all samples through the Resilience Project to identify protective factors for monogenic diseases.

ASPREE has also generated SNP array data with Bioplatforms Australia and Monash University to support research into chronic diseases of ageing such as dementia, stroke, and diabetes. SNP data is being integrated with existing phenotypic and clinical data to expand on current sub-studies and foster new research collaborations. NSP profiling of the cohort was finalised in 2018 with support from the Ramaciotti Centre for Genomics at UNSW.

OBJECTIVES

The ASPREE Framework Initiative contributes to:

    • Longitudinal health monitoring: Track the health of ASPREE participants over time with extensive phenotyping and clinical data.
    • Biorepository management: Maintain and utilize a large biobank of biological samples for genetic and biomarker research.
    • Advanced genetic research: Perform whole genome and targeted DNA sequencing to explore genetic factors and discover disease protection mechanisms.
    • SNP data analysis: Integrate SNP array data with existing clinical data to investigate age-related chronic diseases and support ongoing sub-studies.
