– ABOUT
The Australian Marine Fish Genomics Program
Australia’s marine jurisdiction covers 11 million square kilometres of oceans. Approximately 3.8 million square kilometres, or 43% of Australian waters, are part of 60 established Australian Marine Parks and are managed by Parks Australia. Our marine environments are under increasing pressures and it is crucial to ensure Australia’s unique coastal and ocean ecosystems are protected and managed while sustainable marine-based industries have the opportunity to thrive.
An audit of the existing genomics referential data showed that only 20% of the described Australian marine fish genera had available referential genomic data, with just over 3% having species-level genomics information.
Bioplatforms Australia is partnering with Minderoo Foundation to establish the Australian Marine Fish Genomics Program.

OBJECTIVES
The Australian Marine Fish Genomics Program aims to:
-
- generate essential referential genomic data for significant marine fish species at the family level.
- generate data assets to support the monitoring, management and conservation of Australia’s unique marine fish species.
