ABOUT

COE FOR INDIGENOUS AND ENVIRONMENTAL HISTORIES And FUTURES

The ARC Centre of Excellence for Indigenous and Environmental Histories and Futures (CIEHF) is transforming land and sea management by integrating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander-led approaches with Western science. The Centre aims to create sustainable management practices that draw from Indigenous knowledge and Western frameworks to address environmental, cultural, and historical changes over the past millennium and into the future.

Headquartered at James Cook University and led by Distinguished Professor Sean Ulm, the Centre is part of a $89 million, seven-year research initiative. Its mission is to improve environmental forecasting, enhance Indigenous research capacity, and inform evidence-based policy-making. A key focus is creating a strong pipeline for Indigenous students to engage in research through fully-funded scholarships and mentoring programs.

CIEHF collaborates with 30 research organisations, including seven Australian universities and eight Indigenous Partner Organisations. It supports over 90 research student opportunities, 40 research positions, and delivers education and outreach programs that contribute to national curriculum development, promoting Indigenous knowledge for Australia’s future.
