ARC CoE in Synthetic Biology
The ARC Centre of Excellence in Synthetic Biology (CoESB) is at the forefront of innovation, aiming to establish a sustainable advanced biomanufacturing industry. The Centre focuses on engineering next-generation microbial cell factories that carry out complex biochemical transformations, turning agricultural biomass and waste into high-value chemicals, bioplastics, biofuels, and other environmentally friendly products.
With expertise in synthetic biology, the Centre designs custom microbial communities, synthetic organelles, and novel biological pathways that surpass the capabilities of natural systems. These advancements are key to driving Australia’s bioeconomy, reducing reliance on fossil fuels, and strengthening rural economies through decentralised biomanufacturing.
CoESB is dedicated to translating research into industry-relevant outcomes by addressing critical questions, supporting start-ups, and developing commercialisation opportunities. Training programs for students and early career researchers (EMCRs) are a key focus, ensuring they are prepared for industry roles. These efforts are driving Australia’s transition to a sustainable bioeconomy, transforming agricultural waste into high-value products.
