Genomics Health Futures Mission
The Genomics Health Futures Mission is investing $500.1 million to revolutionise clinical care through genomic medicine. Harnessing genetic information enables faster diagnoses of rare diseases, personalised treatments, classification of cancerous tumours, and genetic disease risk assessments.
The program aims to enhance disease management and improve patient outcomes by refining testing and diagnosis, personalising treatments, and reducing health costs. It is committed to integrating genomic technologies in a safe, cost-effective, and equitable manner.
With objectives that include transforming the lives of over 200,000 Australians, advancing genomics in everyday healthcare, and supporting innovative clinical trials and technologies, the mission also focuses on developing a skilled workforce and fostering new industries. Secure management of genomic data is a key priority.
Notable projects include Mackenzie’s Mission, which offers genetic screening to identify serious conditions early, and ProCan, which creates a comprehensive cancer genomics database to improve diagnosis and treatment. The mission is managed by the Medical Research Future Fund (MRFF), overseen by the Health and Medical Research Office, and administered by the NHMRC and the Department of Industry, Science and Resources.
