ABOUT

Melanoma

Melanoma in Australia is a major public health challenge, remaining a leading cause of cancer deaths, especially among younger adults. Prognosis for advanced stages is poor, with limited effective treatments. Despite this, genetic research has uncovered targeted therapies, offering promise for improved outcomes. However, being caused by ultraviolet light exposure, melanoma presents with numerous mutations, posing treatment challenges.

Biomolecular datasets have identified key mutations driving melanoma and aided therapeutic development. Genomic sequences from a large portion of melanoma patients are publicly accessible to researchers and clinicians.

This Bioplatforms Australia Framework Data Initiative was led by Professor Graham Mann from The University of Sydney in collaboration with the Queensland Institute of Medical Research, Westmead Millennium Institute, Melanoma Institute Australia, the John Curtin School of Medical Research, Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research, Western Australian Institute for Medical Research, and Edith Cowan University.

OBJECTIVES

The creation of referential data resources for melanoma research aimed to:

    • Advance therapeutics: Facilitate the discovery of therapeutic agents targeting melanoma through an understanding of the genetic basis of the disease.
    • Characterise mutations: Utilise biomolecular datasets to identify ‘driver’ mutations responsible for melanoma, aiding in the development of targeted therapies.

    • Generate and share data: Produce genome sequences from a large melanoma patient cohort and make them available as a public resource by partnering with multiple research institutions to advance melanoma research and treatment.
