– ABOUT
Oz mammals genomics
Australia’s unique terrestrial mammal fauna faces ongoing threats with approximately 30 species lost in the last two centuries, including iconic ones like the thylacine and pig-footed bandicoot. To address this crisis, the Oz Mammals Genomics Framework Data Initiative was established in 2016 to collect genomic resources from species across Australia, including historical specimens, to understand and protect these mammals.
Australian marsupials, with their distinct genetics and developmental uniqueness, offer a wealth of information on evolution, including insights into antimicrobials and sex chromosome evolution. The initiative yielded globally significant discoveries, notably from the Koala Genome, laying the groundwork for a deeper understanding of mammalian diversity worldwide.
This collaborative effort involved over 30 partners led by the Australian Museum and Australian National University, with support from major museums, research institutions, government agencies, and NGOs nationally and internationally. By pooling genomic data from diverse sources, the project enhanced our understanding of mammal evolution and extinction risk, providing a vital resource for conservation efforts.

OBJECTIVES
The Oz Mammals Genomics Initiative aimed to:
-
- Build genomic resources: develop a foundational dataset of genomic information to advance the understanding and conservation of Australia’s unique mammals.
- Establish genomic capacity: strengthen the genomics capabilities across Australian museums, government agencies, and research institutions, creating a sustainable scientific community.
- Enhance awareness and protection: increase public and conservation managers’ awareness of Australia’s mammal diversity and demonstrate how genomics can contribute to their protection.
